The association
The Association pour la Modernisation du Clavier Français is a French non-profit association under the loi 1901, entirely volunteer-run. It is the organisation behind AZERTY Global and everything the project publishes.
Our purpose
Article 2 of the statutes, signed on 17 March 2026.
The purpose of the association is to contribute to the modernisation of the French keyboard and to make written input easier — accented capitals, typography, symbols, accessibility, digital practices — through free and open-source keyboard layouts that install on Windows, macOS and Linux.
In particular, it may:
- develop, maintain and distribute keyboard layouts suited to contemporary use;
- distribute educational and technical resources;
- run awareness activities, workshops and sessions in schools and companies;
- work with researchers and institutions to evaluate the benefits of these layouts scientifically;
- seek grants, donations and partnerships compatible with its purpose.

What the association has done

Publishing and distributing the layout
The association publishes the AZERTY Global layout for Windows, macOS and Linux, free of charge and under the open-source EUPL 1.2 licence. On Windows, a dedicated app is published on the Microsoft Store. The source code is public and the layout remains a free download.
Supporting organisations
An enterprise kit is available for IT departments: an MSIX package signed by the association, deployment documents and printable materials. Schools and companies can also write to the association directly.
Publishing learning resources
The site gathers free resources: a quick-start guide, a French typography guide, a comparison of layouts, a history of AZERTY and a FAQ.
Running the community
User feedback comes in through GitHub and an open Discord server. It shapes later versions. Bugs and suggestions go through the feedback page.
Milestones
- 17 March 2026 — founding general meeting in Clermont-Ferrand; statutes signed.
- 27 March 2026 — declaration receipt issued by the Riom sub-prefecture, RNA W632015664.
- 7 April 2026 — published in the Journal officiel des associations, announcement no. 1771.
- 2026 — the AZERTY Global layout is published free of charge under the EUPL 1.2 licence, as a free download and on the Microsoft Store, for Windows, macOS and Linux.
- 2026 — free educational resources published: a quick-start guide, a French typography guide, a comparison of layouts and an history of AZERTY.
Host a workshop
The association runs sessions for companies, schools, public bodies and other nonprofits: discovering the layout, French typography awareness (accented capitals, punctuation), and help with a deployment.
Sessions are volunteer-run, currently in the Auvergne region (France), depending on the team’s availability.
